Head of Geospatial Data

Join Surpass as our Head of Geospatial Data and take ownership of the geospatial domain across the platforms we build. We combine startup agility with deep technology expertise to deliver complex, data & AI/ML driven systems for government and enterprise organizations. This is a hands-on technical leadership role spanning geospatial architecture, data, standards, and development, with a major focus on a national-scale platform where spatial intelligence directly supports real-world decisions. What you’ll do: Own the geospatial domain end to end - architecture, standards, technical direction, and hands-on development. Build and maintain spatial data pipelines for ingesting, validating, transforming, and processing data from multiple, inconsistent, and legacy sources. Develop large-scale spatial and geometric analysis capabilities. Design and optimize PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases, including data models, indexing, spatial queries, and data lifecycle management. Build and maintain map services, APIs, backend components, and spatial services for project teams and applications. Define geospatial development methodologies, technical standards, and data-quality practices across projects. Support technical specifications, architecture decisions, tenders, vendors, and professional stakeholders on complex geospatial requirements. Being Surpass’s knowledge leads to advanced geospatial technologies, evaluating commercial and open-source GIS platforms, and driving the adoption of AI/ML for spatial analysis. What you bring: At least 3 years of hands-on experience with geospatial systems, spatial data, and software development. Strong hands-on development experience with Python and PostgreSQL/PostGIS, including production-grade code and large-scale spatial data pipelines. Deep understanding of geospatial data and processing, including data quality, geometry processing, coordinate systems, and complex legacy data. Strong system-thinking and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to understand complex processes end-to-end and translate business needs into robust technical solutions. Strong open-source mindset and hands-on experience with geospatial technologies such as GeoPandas, GDAL, Shapely, GeoServer, QGIS, and related tools. Ability to work independently, take full ownership of the domain, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with AWS serverless environments – a strong advantage. Experience in exploration and adoption of AI/ML Geospatial data analytics and solutions – an advantage.
